Shawn Ahrens remembers the Valentine's Day fire raging in the Cicero house, the flames suddenly shooting through the roof and knocking down the chimney. Dozens of bricks toppled on the firefighter's head and battered him until he was unconscious and buried alive.
"Next thing I know, I woke up in the hospital and didn't know where I was or what happened," he said.
Ahrens was hospitalized for four days and suffered a 6-inch cut on the back of his head, along with neck and spine injuries, and broken ribs.
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Metropolitan Police Department is now handling the investigation of a paramedic who was in charge of the care for two-year-old Stephanie Stephens when a decision was made not to take the little girl to the hospital in the early morning hours of February 10th. A second crew transported Stephens to Children's National Medical Center about nine-hours later. She died the next day at the hospital. Her family says the girl had pneumonia.
