Due to the success of previous recruiting efforts and the relatively low turnover in the last year or two, we will likely not do any recruiting until early 2011.

The Fire District relies heavily on volunteers in combination with the career staff to provide quality emergency response and cost effective operation of the organization. Because we only accept candidates who live or work in the Fire District, the volunteers provide a direct tie to the community and give real meaning to the concept of "neighbor helping neighbor". This is no ordinary volunteer opportunity. The required committment of time and effort is substantial. You will be challenged intellectually and emotionally as you are called upon to help folks when they need it the most. You will gain knowledge and learn skills that will help you deal with medical emergencies as a responder and also at home or your work setting. You will gain confidence in your ability to keep your cool in a crisis and make decisions under pressure.

Over the years, a number of our volunteers have taken the training and experience they have gained with us and turned it into a career in the fire service, emergency medical field, or other related area. Others have used their volunteer experience to bring some excitment, adventure, and balance into their lives. When you join the fire service you become part of a unique and special family. You will work with a dedicated team to the benefit of your community.

While there is a substantial time committment required, there is little or no financial requirement. In fact, you will receive an annual reimbursement to cover any out of pocket cost with the amount dependent on your level of activity. Once you are beyond your probation period, you will receive a stipend for each shift you work. All required training, uniforms, and safety equipment is provided. Funds are available to provide extra training and education (including college courses). We have a well equipped workout room and provide wellness classes. A number of events are sponsored each year that include the whole family.

If you think the fire service might be a good place for you, read on!

The initial training prepares you for the role of EMS Responder. There is a lot to learn and apply and your first 18 months or so will be focused in this area. Medical calls comprise over 60 percent of our responses so you will see plenty of action!

After the first 18 months, you will have the opportunity to participate in additional training to prepare you for the front line role of Fire Fighter/Emergency Medical Technician. This requires a higher level of physical capability and a significant additional commitment of time and effort so may not be right for everyone. However, it also puts you in the middle of the action regardless of the type of emergency. Challenge yourself; the rewards are tremendous!

Youth interested in Emergency Services can join the Explorer Post affiliated with the Fire District. They will learn basic fire fighting and emergency medical skills and participate in District activities.

And for everyone else, we are developing our Support Program. The Fire District provides a broad range of services and is looking to expand. Chances are we can find a way to match our needs with your available time, expertise, and interest.
